According to Susan Taylor, Editor Emeritus of Essence magazine and founder of the National Cares Mentoring Movement, “mentoring is all about caring”.  Ms. Taylor was the featured speaker at a reception sponsored by Greater Cleveland Cares Mentoring Movement, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Inc. and The Village TV at the beautiful East Mt. Zion Church where Rev. A. Charles Bowie is the pastor.  Ms. Taylor encouraged the audience to care about the future of our race by committing just 1 hour a week to provide positive guidance to a child.  She also challenged Clevelanders to answer the call for mentors to help a generation on the brink of destruction.  

This was not the first time Ms. Taylor has visited Cleveland calling for the community to embrace mentoring as a tool to help children.  In late 2009, she was in the city launching Greater Cleveland Cares Mentoring Movement, the local chapter of the national organization, which she founded.   During that reception one young man was so moved by the call to action that he signed up to become a mentor.  Don Bradford, CEO and President of Datafax, Inc., told the attendees at the East Mt. Zion reception that he would soon be matched with a young person to mentor.  He also told the attendees that he would challenge young men in his company to follow suit.
