Principal Steve Perry:
Closing the Gap One Student at a Time

 

Like many minorities born into poverty, life was not an easy journey for Dr. Steve Perry. His future was entirely uncertain as he was growing up. Fortunately, he was destined to find salvation in his modest beginnings, and motivation from his lifestyle.  Ultimately, that motivation was what made him decide to not only be something but also to be someone who makes a difference in others' lives and give them that motivation as well.  As a student Dr. Perry was inspired by Leslie Saunders, who is a current staff member at Capital Preparatory School, a mentor and chorus teacher. Saunders had not only faith in Steve Perry but she also had faith in his abilities, providing the turning point telling him, when discussing his negative behavior as a young student, “There's another way.”  Such monumental figures in Perry's life would prove the importance of having teachers in schools that care to push our children. Perry noted this importance saying, “Great educators produce inspiration that lasts a lifetime”.  Today Steve Perry carries a variety of titles, not limited to but including: author, educator, and visionary.  When asked what led him to do the work he has done today, Perry said matter-of fact, “It's something I feel I'm called to do.  I always wanted to help people.”
