Your Stake in the American DreamThis year's presidential bid by Barack Obama is a testament of our democracy and opportunity that we have in America. Many of us who immigrated here and have made this country our home are grateful for the chance to experience the American dream, as the late Martin Luther King Jr. eloquently stated in his famous speech,” All men are created equal”. He went on to say that we are all endowed with greatness and compassion for all mankind, white, black and yellow. In my search for the meaning of these recent events, I have found the answers to my questions. In each answer lies a kernel of awareness that we are all responsible for each other. It is true that some of us are going through tough times and that things are not always easy nor is our plight sometimes easy to comprehend. As an eternal optimist I have come to accept that, there is no mountain high enough, no river too long if you are determined. We must do our best to make this country and the world a better place for our families, kids, our friends and our fellow citizens. I am reminded by the Bible that God made Adam and Eve and we are all descendants of this family of God. I echo the sentiments of Obama that “there is no red or blue American - there is the United States of America.” We, as African Americans must do our part in extending ourselves to the White, Hispanic, Asian and other cultures if we are to realize this God given destiny of a more just and prosperous people. I urge you to do your part in promoting a color blind and agenda free people. We are all one family, separated by rivers, lakes and mountains and geographical location but one in spirit and our desire for a brighter tomorrow. The world around us is looking up to America to see how we practice our democracy. Our people must never lose their zeal for building a better world regardless of who becomes our next president. We must tap into the overlooked and under developed potential of our youth. We must also encourage the younger generation to claim their rightful place by taking part in building our country to even greater heights than the generation before us. They must never be discouraged from aspiring toward greatness for they are the leaders of tomorrow. We have a powerful potential in our youth, and we must embrace change and new ideas so that we sow the seeds for a bountiful harvest of equipped, empowered and focused individuals in succeeding generations. Together we can bridge the divide that has eroded our common desire for a more tolerant compassionate, prosperous and human nation. God Bless each and every one of you.
